So it’s that time of year where The Undertaker is about to make his return, and we’ve yet to find out who his opponent may be. Now I know there has be rumors, and speculation on who his opponent may be, from the likes of Brock Lesnar, Daniel Bryan, and the most recent, and popular one, John Cena. Now as everyone knows, these’s a just rumor’s from the ever so popular dirt sheets that we all know and love, but we have to think about what’s “best for business.”
One thing we almost know for sure is that this could very well be Taker’s last match in WWE, since he’s at that age to retire. When I think about who would be the best suited opponent for Taker, one thing that comes to mind is, it shouldn’t be a part time wrestler. Reason being is why give it to someone who it’s not going to benefit? Why take someone like Brock Lesnar, who only wrestles when he feels like it, have him face Taker, gain all this attention because of it, then leave for another six months to a year and not take full advantage of it. Why not give the match to someone who is going to be there for a while, and someone who will be able to take everything he’s learned, and gained from what could be said to be the best match of his career, and run with it?
Next thing to look at, should it be someone he’s faced before, or should it be someone new? When looking at this point, there’s pros and cons to both scenarios. When you choose someone he’s already went up against at Wrestlemania, you could always pull the, “You’ve beat me once Undertaker, but you’re not gonna beat me again!” story line , the only down fall with this way is, it’s been done numerous times before. Take a look at both Triple H and Shawn Michaels. Both superstars have faced The Undertaker at Wrestlemania, and both lost. Later on down the road, the challenge Taker once again saying that they were going to win, and end the streak, when of course after a long, hard fought match, Taker wins it. So I feel that doing that story line once again would only make this match less eventful. Now if you were to grab someone he’s never faced at Mania, you would still have to same story line that’s be done before, you know the “I’m young, I’ve got something to prove!” type deal, which in my opinion would be the best bet, because like I said earlier, it would benefit everyone in the long run, the only question is who? And I’m going to discuss a couple choices that I’ve thought up and give you why or why they shouldn’t be the one for the Streak match at Mania.
First I’m going to discuss the recently popular pick John Cena. Now there have been some rumors that Cena has been tweeting, that he’s seen Taker doesn’t have an opponent for Wrestlemania. Thanks to the whole fact that superstars have been tweeting and deleting here as of late, it’s hard to tell if this is true or not. Now one thing I will tell you is that this would not be a smart decision on WWE’s creative teams part. Sorry Cena fans, I know you want to see Cena go and end the streak of the Undertaker, and that’s exactly why it would be a bad idea. You would have so many people rooting for Cena, and with the way Creative is looking here as of late it wouldn’t surprise me that they would have Cena defeat Taker. And even if he were to go into the match and lose, what would Cena benefit from it? He’s already faced and defeated The Rock at Wrestlemania for the WWE title, the man is only going to beat Flair’s total number of title reigns, he’s held almost every title the WWE. What else does the man need to accomplish? We’ve seen Cena vs. Taker, multiple times, and I really don’t think watching him lose at Mania would be worth it, so Cena shouldn’t be a pick for this match.
The next person, and in my personal opinion, the best choice would be Roman Reigns. What a better way to put the guy, who you’re wanting to groom to be the next face of the company, than to have him face one of the most highly respected superstars to ever walk into WWE? And even better you could play it off of a couple different story line ideas. First of all, it was Reigns and the shield would “took out” Taker, making him not be at any of the events in almost a year, secondly after being the only member to defeat CM Punk, and now calling himself “The New Best in the World” why not have him set out to do what Punk couldn’t do. And with the fact The Shield is rumored to break up, what better way to add the fuel to the fire. Just everything about Reigns being the one going into this matter, screams YES! to me. Of course, Reigns would lose, because the streak shouldn’t be something that should ever end, and should go into the Hall of Fame with Taker, but it could definitely be something that could put Reigns WAY over the top.
Either way, I’m sure WWE already has an idea of who they’re going to have face Taker at Mania, and I’m sure we’re going to find out when he returns on the 24th. But whoever it may be, I hope it’s something we can all agree on. If Taker is going to retire this year, I hope they send him out right and respectfully.
